Chardonnay (1) vs. Riesling (3)
This one is a really tough one for me because I enjoy both of these wines at different times. One of my favorite wines ever is the Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling. Rieslings pair so well with different foods plus usually stand by themselves just as well. And yet when I go to parties or restaurants, I mainly find myself just asking for the house Chardonnay.
It's a simple go-to choice that almost never disappoints me. Chardonnay has been the favorite for so many years that I'm just not sure Riesling can knock it off. Based on play so far in our tournament, though, Riesling has a fighting chance. I think this is going to be a fight to the finish. And I hope it's a long finish. Because that's how I like my wines.
Reds
Pinot Noir(1) vs. Malbec (6)
I've been routing for Malbec all along, but now that they're up against my long-time favorite Pinot Noir, I'm torn! Do I route for the home team, or continue to hope for an upset by the newcomer? Honestly, as long as there's a chance to drink both of these wines, everybody wins. I'd be happy no matter who moves on. That being said, I think Pinot Noir has a better chance at defeating Chardonnay in the finals, whereas if Riesling moves on, either Malbec or Pinot could be crowned champion.
