Eric and I have a running joke that when we see the UPS or FedEx truck coming down the street we can't help but think of the song “The Wells Fargo Wagon” from “The Music Man.” They mention a lot of potential delivery items in that song (it could be curtains, or dishes, or a DOUBLE BOILER!) but nothing about wine clubs. For me, one of the best deliveries I receive each month is my wine club shipment.
Don't get me wrong. When the box comes, I don't immediately grab a glass and my wine opener and break into a bottle. That would take away from the real enjoyment of receiving a wine club. First I open it and inspect everything for damage (never once a broken bottle!). Then I check for everything included besides wine bottles–special gifts, gift cards, tasting notes, recipes, etc.
Only after I go through all of that do I start reading about the wine. I read everything on the bottle from vineyard to alcohol content to varietal. Then I take out the tasting notes/newsletter (each wine club does this differently) and start reading about the wine from their perspective, including what it should be paired with. Sometimes at this point I will even do an Internet search on the wine to find the value of the bottle and read any reviews online that others may have written.
After all of that, I finally put the bottle away (sometimes after snapping a couple of pictures if there is anything unique about it). White wines and sparkling wines go in my wine refrigerator. Red wines go on racks in the basement. It's quite a process but it's a fun one. The last club that I received was a box of the Champagne of the Month club that my husband bought for me.
