Every now and again I receive wine from a wine club that I would never have thought to buy for myself but ends up being perfect for me. The Pacific Northwest Series from The California Wine Club turned out to be one of those. Who knew that some of my very favorite wines are actually produced in Oregon?
The California Wine Club is known for seeking out small boutique wineries and hand selecting the wines for its clubs based on taste and quality. They have taken that same approach to the wineries of Washington and Oregon and the result is their new Pacific Northwest Series.
Unlike some of their other clubs, this one only ships every other month or quarterly. You get 2 bottles in your choice of 2 reds or 1 red and 1 white. The club price ranges around $80 including shipping, which is higher than their most popular series (the Premier) but around the same as their International Series.
As with their other clubs, you get all of the membership “perks” such as a gift in your first shipment (these vary but right now it is a set of beautiful notecards and a certificate for $25 worth of wine), the Uncorked newsletter full of wine information, and tasting notes for each wine. The website also has recipes that pair with the wines. The recipe that paired with my May Pinot Noir was for Chocolate Ganache Cupcakes. It's like they know me!
It turns out that the Pacific Northwest is known for producing Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, which are two of my favorite wines. The 2010 Willamette Valley “First Class” Estate Grown Pinor Noir from Benton Lake Winery was probably one of the best Pinot Noirs that I have ever had.
