Garagiste (pronounced gar-uh-zheest‘) used to be an insult by French winemakers, who mocked US wines which were carefully produced in small batches, often in the garage of the winemaker. But those winemakers, who focused on creating high-quality wines, are getting the last laugh.
Garagiste wines most often call California's Paso Robles (central coast) region home, but the movement has spread throughout California, Oregon and Washington as well. The production runs are small (the Pinot Noir that I received only had 169 cases made!)
Each wine club selection is handcrafted by skilled and passionate winemakers in very small quantities. Limited to small-lot winemakers who typically produce less than 1,500 cases annually, means these wines are virtually impossible to find in the marketplace.
